Scarlett
I noticed that when it comes to SEO and Google, things are always changing and it seems very hard for a smaller site (one that gets under 10k views a day) to stay relevant on their search engine. Is there a way to check what could be done to improve your rankings on Google and ensure you are going what Google likes to rank better or is it just a toss up and some people just end up lucky? James
The free tool you can use is Googles Search Console: https://search.google.com/ You can get a ton of data about your site in there. My favorite tool for SEO work is Ahrefs: https://ahrefs.com/ This is a paid tool but the information provided is so helpful for your SEO tool stack. This is really all I use now days. Of course there is a little luck involved but it is the long term consistent action that will make that luck helpful for you.
Stacey
Once you learn the patterns, it becomes easier but you do have to get lucky now and then. I have had blog posts with relevant keywords and all the right information bomb while others I just happened to write at the right time and they did fantastic.

I know there are so many tools online meant to help with SEO but I have such a hard time making sense of them. If I can't figure these out, I will see if there are some videos on YouTube explaining everything.
Yonder
There are certain things that one can consider *always* to be good, such as reelvant keywords, site load speed, user friendliness etc. The rest you can update on a bi-annually basis based on your traffic flow.
