Mila
Some people go house shopping alone while others work with an agent. What would you say are the upsides to working with a real estate agent, and what are some of the downsides?
James
As a buyer I can not see any downside to working with an agent. The seller pays the commission so get an agent in there to be the communicator for you. That way you have less emotion involved and are less likely to do something you may not have done. Good real estate agents have a place in the transaction. They can really add value to your purchase you just need to work with the right ones. Someone with extreme local knowledge that you can ask very specific questions to. There are a lot of agents out there that will just set you up with looking at mls listings which is the same thing you can do yourself on any real estate portal. So do not work with the people that just set you up with an automated search. Find someone that can get you pocket listings, teach you about neighborhoods, and point out red flags you may not be thinking about.
StanleyZEN
The upsides is that they will work for you in finding buyers and staging the place. Usually they handle just about everything for you. Otherwise, all of those challenges will be up to you to take up if you decide to sell on your own. But, the downside is that they get a cut of the sale, but it could also result in a bigger sale because of their talents.
